Crash
Cooper
“You could call me the backup bullfighter….,” chuckles CrAsh Cooper, “…that’s WAYYY back!”
The Ponoka Stampede once again welcomes rodeo’s premier funny man, as CrAsh Cooper and his barrel join the bullfighters in the arena. He’s there for comic relief and to help entertain the crowd during any delays during bull riding. But don’t be fooled – he can jump into action if needed.
“Scott Byrne got run over one time and I had to fill him for him, to finish a performance at Ponoka,” recalls Cooper. “I did the same thing in Cheyenne once.”
Even last year at Ponoka, Cooper showed some fancy footwork, when a cow during the junior riding event came straight for him on the run.
“She caught me right out there in the middle of the arena, and I threw a fake and sidestepped her and the crowd loved it,” he laughs.
Not everyone may have realized Cooper did get his rodeo start as a bullfighter, spending ten years in the craft, including freestyle bullfighting competitions at the CFR, and even fighting bulls as far away as the New Zealand National Finals rodeo.
CrAsh Cooper much prefers his clown role these days, which he likens to being a stand-up comic. He has been recognized ten times as Canada’s top comedy or contract act in professional rodeo, and is the only Canadian rodeo clown to have been selected to perform at the NFR.
Cooper makes the annual trek from the family ranch at Senlac, SK to delight the fans and pester the pickup men during Ponoka’s festivities. He also delights in a never-ending battle of words and wits with rodeo announcer Dr. Lynn Phillips.
“Clowning is way harder than bullfighting,” insists Cooper, who prides himself on being original, timely and bringing something fresh to the crowd every performance. “It’s hard to be a good clown,” he clarifies.
“Being a bullfighter helps as well, because you’re a bit more of an asset.”
Ponoka is one of the few places rodeo fans get to see Cooper’s comedic talents now, as clowning takes a back seat to his many other pursuits. Chief among them is being Dad and hockey coach for his son Jinks (14) and daughter Jesse (13). He’s also busy with the cattle herd, plus raising bucking horses under the “Cooper Clan Bucking Horse Company”. Cooper Clan horses have been to the NFR, and have consistently been successful at the NFR Bucking Futurity in Las Vegas.
CrAsh Cooper’s creativity is not limited to his work in the entertainment industry. He is also an accomplished western artist, and his cartoons are regular favorites in the Canadian Cowboy Country magazine. You’ll find his artwork on Leanin’ Tree greeting cards as well.
Lately, CrAsh has found a new outlet, doing art presentations at schools, spinning a cartoon exercise with students into a confidence builder for them. He also does some special crowd engagement work during the Ponoka PBR event. Throw in some keynote speaking presentations, and there seems to be no end to Cooper’s talent range.
“They all still make people laugh,” says Cooper, “which is what I like to do.”

VOLD IS GOLD 🏆
CONGRATULATIONS, WAYNE VOLD & VOLD RODEO.
The Ponoka Stampede is incredibly proud to congratulate Wayne Vold and Vold Rodeo Ltd. on being named the 2026 Stock Contractor of the Year!
For the Vold family, rodeo and the Ponoka Stampede share a history that stretches back generations.
Wayne is a second-generation stock contractor who followed in the footsteps of his father, legendary stock contractor Harry Vold. The Vold family’s connection to Ponoka goes all the way back to the early days of the Stampede, when Harry brought horses to Ponoka before becoming its primary stock contractor.
Wayne eventually took over the Canadian operation and built Vold Rodeo Ltd., continuing a family tradition that has helped shape the quality of rodeo in Ponoka for decades.
And for Wayne, this award belongs to far more than one person.
“I really appreciate this,” Wayne said. “It all comes together with all the hard work and organization Team Vold puts in… everyone on the team. It takes a lot of effort. And we never quit trying to improve our stock. We’re always looking for new horses and bulls. Vold Rodeo is alive and well because of our great team.”
That commitment to continually raising the bar is something we know well in Ponoka. Year after year, Wayne and Team Vold have played an important role in bringing outstanding bucking stock and world-class rodeo action to the Ponoka Stampede.
Wayne has previously said of Ponoka, “I’m very proud of this rodeo… We’ve been a part of it for a long time. It’s a good one.”
The feeling is certainly mutual.
From the generations of the Vold family who have travelled through our parade to the incredible livestock that continues to enter our arena, the Vold name is woven into the history of the Ponoka Stampede.
Congratulations to Wayne, Nansen Vold and the entire Vold Rodeo Ltd. team on this well-deserved recognition as the 2026 Stock Contractor of the Year.
We are proud to have you as part of the Ponoka Stampede family and even prouder to celebrate this incredible achievement with you.

40 THOUSAND DOLLARS 💰
Ponoka rodeo fans were treated to seeing one of their own come through in the team roping event, when local horse trainer Derek Hadland and his heeling partner Jeremy Buhler were the only one of the four teams to make a clean run in the Showdown, with a 7.9 second run.
“I knew that was the best steer,” says Buhler.
“We ran him in the twelve-man (Finals) and we knew what he was going to do, so that made it easy,” adds Hadland.
The two started roping together just this spring.
“It’s always a dream to get hooked up with a champ, and it’s working out,” says Hadland.
“It was honestly an easy choice for me,” explains Buhler, a World Champion heeler.
“I’ve been watching Derek develop over the years. You can tell when someone’s got a style, and then you look at their horses, and go, ‘yea, he’s got it’. Just glad to be on his team now.”
While Buhler is enjoying staying closer to home and his young family this season, the score of $20,539 apiece may have the team rethinking their travel plans.
“It’s huge, winning a rodeo like this, so it’s something to think about,” says Buhler.
It was his third Ponoka heeling title.
“It never gets any less special. It’s just as important to me.”

STILETTOS IN THE MUD 💰
When some barrel racing horses were running more cautiously in the mud, a big bay mare out of Texas proved she was no prima dona, even if her name is Stiletto.
Michelle Alley made her first trip to Canada as her jockey, and despite a muddy track on their inaugural trip, she came in second fastest overall with the horse.
They came back to win the Finals, the Showdown and the overall Ponoka title, not to mention the $20,799 payday.
“She almost tipped third (barrel) going in. I really had to hold her off, and that’s why we bowed off. But the good Lord was looking over us and it stayed up,” says Alley.
“I think every run I rocked a barrel!”
“Holy cow, this is really going to help out our season. I only entered Ponoka, Cody and Oakley over the fourth (of July run). I really limited my runs, so I wanted to capitalize on them, and obviously we did here.”

$19,962 and ALL GOLD ROLEX ⌚️
Saskatchewan’s Grady Young rode the Vold bull All Gold Rolex for a 90.25, to claim his first Ponoka title.
“Checked off the bucket list,” grins Young.
“All the rodeos I enter are on that bucket list to win. I’m trying to win every single one. I’m just here to ride bulls and have fun and let the rest take care of itself.”
“That’s the first time this bull has been ridden. I’ve kind of got a hankering for rank bulls. They’re more fun to ride and when you ride them, it’s more rewarding.”
Along with the trophy saddle, buckle and jacket, Young also wins $19,962.
