Ponoka Stampede Day 7 Wrap

TB 3 made his first trip to Ponoka worthwhile.

Trey Benton III made a statement at last year’s National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, where he finished runner-up to the four-time World Champion Bull Rider Sage Kimzey. And he showed that winning form Sunday during the sixth performance of the 82nd Ponoka Stampede. He matched moves with the big Outlaw Buckers bull called Tennessee Whiskey for 88.75 points, to finish with the highest score of the regular action.

There’s just something about Ponoka – at least for Stephen Culling. The steer wrestler from Fort St. John, B.C. proved Saturday that it’s a favorite stop on his rodeo calendar, when he surged to the lead in the same town where he walked out with the champion’s spoils two years ago.

Just because you’ve won the Ponoka Stampede before once, or even twice, doesn’t make it any easier to do it again.

Especially if you’re a hometown hero.

Jake Vold acknowledged that, right after he turned out his toes for an awesome spur ride that the rodeo judges rewarded with 88.75 points on Friday afternoon, making him the new bareback riding leader.

Rodeo contestants come from miles away to take part in the Ponoka Stampede – places like Winnemuca, Nevada; Collbran, Colorado; or Sour Lake, Texas.

But in the third performance of the 82nd Stampede, it was the competitors from the ‘hood that did some turf protecting.

When it comes to steer wrestling at the Ponoka Stampede, one clan has been dominant. The Cassidy’s, from just down the road at Donalda, have the family name on the champion’s plaque multiple times.

During the second performance of this year’s 82nd annual event, Cody Cassidy put himself in contention for another title for the crew.

Ponoka Stampede Day 1

If you’re going to ride bucking horses when you’re over 40, you’d better be in good shape and you’d better know your game.

Kelly Timberman proved he’s both, during the opening performance of the 82nd annual Ponoka Stampede. The Wyoming cowboy recorded the high mark in a round of bareback riding filled with scores well into the 80’s.

Ponoka Stampede Preview

It’s hard to say who is more excited for the start of the Ponoka Stampede – the fans, the organizers, or the contestants. Safe to say when the ‘thunder rolls’ on June 26 as the bucking horses gallop down the track to the infield for the 82nd edition, there will be no shortage of adrenaline anywhere on the Stampede grounds.
